Big bore TBI's
06/20/15 at 07:24:19

Occasionally I get a request to build a JimD style big bore TBI since Jim passed on his blueprints and wealth of information to me several years ago when he fully retired from the hobby... Time and my health issues prevent me from actually being able to build any however.

That having been said, I have a retired friend who was a machinist for over 40 years and he has expressed an interest in perhaps building some of these with a couple of upgrades on Jim's original design which worked very well.

The only catch to this is the fact that this type of modification is extremely labor intensive so building one piece at a time isn't economically viable for the builder or seller; however if you guys are interested and we can come up with a minimum order for at least 5 units the price should be tolerable, more than 5 and he can probably do a smoking deal.

The actual cost per unit will depend on exactly how many are being built, more TBI's = cheaper price per unit.

He can also provide full rebuild service for the TBI with all new gaskets, seals, o-rings, filters, and US cleaned flow matched injectors at whatever psi you want to run.

If this sounds like something you guys would be interested in post up and we'll see if there is enough interest out there to make a setup and CNC some of these jewels out.  Grin

These are the biggest out there boys.  End up in the 900 cfm plus range and are high quality work.  I have a JimD version that is waiting for a reason to go on.  There is not another one out there that will flow as much.

Will allow the engine to breath    its been a while since I been on here so I can't remember if our tbi's were 570 cfm or 670 but going to 900 cfm is a huge upgrade and my opinion if you plan on keeping tbi setup I'd jump on it as jim was the only guy on the planet doin this that I knew of and being he's retired people should jump all over this

The reason I did this modification originally was to get past the smog cops in Calif. where the vehicle MUST pass a visual inspection. The bored out unit looks absolutely stock from the outside.   Cool

The reason I stopped doing them was I became "bored" with doing it after modifying  over 30 of them.   Roll Eyes

Stock is 670 cfm and Jim's design gets over 900 cfm and looks stock as can be from the outside.

It would be a used factory casting and throttle shaft, pretty much every thing else is new and custom machined.

I have a few castings, but normally I would want a core.

Would this benefit me at all installing this on top of the edelbrock multipoint efi system or hurt me since these systems are tuned for mostly stock engines?

Interesting you should ask this.

I originally did this because I had the Edel MPFI set up on my '90.

Worked like a charm.

<----  look at the picture, there it is on the Edel system

and read this:   http://www.454ss.com/gallery/JimD/JimD_TBI.htm

No, I don't have one on my '93, with the Whipple on it why bother?

What price range are we looking at roughly if we get the minimum 5?
If you can PM me a rough estimate it would be much appreciated because I've been considering a used FAST tbi but if this meets my needs it would be great

I can't really nail down a price until I know a specific quantity, if enough of them are built it could be pretty dang cheap.. Just build a few and it will be somewhere north of $300.

There is quite a bit of labor involved in this particular mod, and most of the labor is in the setup work.. The machine setup is the same give or take whether you machine 1 part or 20 so time wise it lowers the actual time spent per unit a fairly drastic amount.

I'll calculate the labor involved at $60 an hour, and there is probably $10-20 per unit for material cost and tooling.

I also tear down the TBI completely and US clean them before blasting them with a BT8 glass beads, after that I give them all a UV penetrant check for cracks, if it makes it through this process then the mating surfaces are machined true and the throttle blade bores are sleeved, rebored and honed true. All that has to be done before I actually start to mod them.. It's quite a bit of work, but if I'm going to go through the trouble to do it I want it right.

When I'm done with it for all practical purposes it is a new unit, not one simply opened up.

There are plenty of places out there that will take your TBI and "make the holes bigger" for somewhere around $200-250 but that's not how I go about it and having used a few of Jim's in the past I know he didn't either.

I need all 5 TBI's shipped to me and I can start on them as soon as they all arrive.

Once upon a time I used to work on stuff with the intent of getting paid when finished but since I have literally done thousands of dollars worth of work that I never got paid for nowadays I have to require payment upfront. I'm sorry for that, but I have to much stuff sitting in my shop already built that I'll never be paid for as it is.

PayPal + fees, or send a check/money order with the TBI, either one is fine with me.

I've got two TBI's in hand so far.. if anyone wants in on this ship me the TBI as soon as possible. Just as soon as I have 5 or more I'll start slinging chips.  Cheesy

Let me know if you ship me one so I can be on the lookout for it.

I've already started machining the ancillary components (IE throttle blades and sleeves)... But I won't start working on the castings till I have them all in hand.

If anyone wants in I did make enough sleeves and butterflies for 5 more while I was at it... Send your TBI to the address above with a check or PayPal me the $$ to mjames@otelco.net and I'll squeeze it in.

Boring and sleeving the TBI is $300, if you want it fully rebuilt and the injectors US cleaned and flowed add another $150 to that, if you are running a blower and want the throttle shaft o-ring'd add another $75.

This will likely be the last time I do this, the price I quoted was for the 5 committed.. I only ended up getting three so I'm in the hole $600 already on the deal as I quoted it. So if you want one better get it now.

I've got the TBI's bored and sleeved, about to setup to finish the bores, I have to go out of town this weekend for a funeral but I'll be back in the shop Tuesday.

Sorry.. I've been at work non stop for the last few weeks, end of year crunch going on.

I'm suppose to be off between Christmas and new years and if that's the case I'll get everything assembled and shipped out as quickly as possible.

Just to keep everybody updated.. I had a little accident in the shop and got pretty close to cutting off my right thumb. It's healing up nicely and hopefully I'll be able to get back in the shop and do some work in the next week or so.

Sorry for the delay.

Not to worry, Mitch may be slower than the second coming as he always has too many irons in the fire, but he does eventually get it done.

Let me vouch for Mitch also.  I met him at one of the Sport Truck Shootouts.  Great guy.  He has my TB also and I'm not worried in the least.  Smiley

Met him at several Shootouts and stop in to see him whenever I'm in his "Neck-of-the-Woods". He's definitely a stand-up dude...

Think your nervous? I forked over almost 2k for heads and machine work to him and couldn't get a hold of him on multiple occasion. But long story short I got the heads and what-not and the machine work was stunning.

From Mitch: "Yeah.. I had an injury and had to get some surgery and rehab which meant I didn't have any time to work on anything, and while I was doing that I got so far behind at work now I am working 16 hrs a day 7 days a week. If anybody is upset I understand, if they would like I can refund their money and replace their TBI, if they want to wait until I have time to finish the. Big bore TBI's that's fine with me but right now I can't say when that will be."

I was able to communicate with Mitch today.  We had a good conversation over texting.  In a nutshell, he is recovering from his final surgery and is planning on returning to his job and the TBIs the 2nd week of January.

He again restated his earlier message that if anyone was unhappy by the delay he would refund and return the tbi.  He said anyone wanting to do that should get in touch with him at 256-572-3152.  I would text, he seems to prefer that over talk.

I thanked him for the update, and told him I wanted him to continue and finish my TBI.  It has been a long time, but I've not been without my truck in the meantime. I have a feeling these are probably going to be the last ones that get built by anyone.

I had mine bored and overhauled by http://www.sprperformance.com/services-1

I found em on Ebay and then found his website, I talked to him for about an hour on the phone, he was very knowledgeable about the TBI's  turn around time for me was about a week, the communication was immediate  as well.

just a suggestion if you guys ever get your TBI's back.

That looks to be an option.  The old JimD design that Mitch bought the plans for is still the biggest made, but if you cannot get him to reply or get it to you guess that seals the deal. Undecided

Actually, I gave the plans to Mitch.

Unfortunately, Mitch has had a worlds supply of bad luck health wise.

I have one TBI left that I did the work on if anyone wants it, but it isn't going to be cheap.

Mitch has had a long string of bad health issues and accidents for him and family.  Black cloud seems to follow them around.  He is a great guy though, he just must be in a bad place.  I still have one of your enlarged TBIs around as well.  Just in case I wanted to play some more. Wink
